Ever wanted to show a YouTube video to your class but found that it took too long to download and stream? Here’s an online tool that will allow you to save YouTube videos to your hard drive. You can then move the downloaded videos to your personal folder on the school server or to a USB stick, etc. Your videos will now play immediately on any computer, whenever you want to show them. Here’s the site:

Keepvid.com

You can download the videos as either .flv or .mp4 formats. I have had the best luck choosing the .mp4 option. Even though the Keepvid site says .mp4 is the “higher-quality” option, I haven’t noticed any difference in quality between the two formats, only that .mp4 seems to download more quickly. Keepvid also works with Google Video, but doesn’t seem to work with TeacherTube.

For convenience, you can insert the “Keepvid bookmarklet” to your browser’s links toolbar, and just click on it whenever you are watching a video you want to download and keep.
